Measure it on half the outfield
Treat one half of the outfield, square to boundary, and leave the other half. The GMA toolkit already tells clubs to inspect the soil profile and root growth in the poorly drained areas, so the comparison is the inspection you were told to do, done on both halves.
- A few cores from each half, before you start and at twelve months.
- Time a ring of water going in on each half, on the same day.
- Days lost or delayed to a wet outfield, and hours mowing and repairing, through the season.
- The county pitch adviser’s view, before and after.
A one page record sheet comes with the order. A baseline soil profile, dug and read before the first application, is a priced extra: ask when you order.
When it goes on. The end of season renovation in September or October, after the outfield has been aerated and scarified and before the new seed closes over. The soil is still warm (SOBAC advises above 12°C for turf) and the ground is out of use, so the fortnight either side with nothing synthetic costs you no fixtures. It is the best natural window of any sport.
